A Child's First Day in Daycare

Young children may struggle to understand why they are being taken to an unfamiliar setting. They are unaware that when you drop them off, you will return to pick them up later. Those initial days are crucial for helping a child feel safe and secure in this new environment. While it is possible for a child to have a positive first day at daycare, this often requires some advance preparation on your part. Here are some tips to help make your child's transition to daycare go more smoothly.

  • Before the first day of school, bring your child to the school for a visit. Give them a tour of the classroom, introduce them to all the different areas, and invite them to play with some of the toys.
  • Leading up to their first day, speak positively about the daycare and teachers. Involve them in packing their bag, and let them choose a blanket, bottle and comfort item to bring with them. This will help ease the transition and make them feel more prepared and in control.
  • Check in with the teacher about any special events scheduled for the day, as they may generate extra excitement in the classroom that might be overwhelming for a first day.
  • For the first few days, assist them in storing their belongings in their designated cubbie, sign them in and accompany them to the teacher or to where the children are playing, then say goodbye. While some children may initially become upset, the crying typically subsides quickly.
  • Consider picking up your child a bit earlier than usual, as some children can become distressed when they see their peers leaving for the day.

Despite your best preparation, some children may still cry when you say goodbye. Some children may adapt well on the first day, only to become upset on the second as they realise you will be gone for an extended period. If your child is inconsolable before or during your departure, we recommend a quick "drop and go" - though we recognise this may be difficult for you.

The teacher will provide you with regular updates on your child's progress throughout the day.
